Shields grinned and took a proper attack stance as his foe stumbled back. He was swelling up with confidence, and couldn't keep the idea of him being big and...Stronger (he was already pretty damn good). He took three good swipes to his face and leg before he heard Ardeo shout 'Move!' and jumped up and back; shaking himself in annoyance. Ardeo clenched a fist, and let a grin split across his face. About time. "Keep it up, buddy. Shock'm up!"

The Persian was quick on his feet to get another attack in before the other pokemon followed orders, feeling the fatigue starting to wear on him. As he dove forward for a Slash attack the shock ran through him, and his attack was cut short immediately. His legs twitched after the initial burst of electricity coursed through him, and he stumbled forward towards Shields a second more before staggering and hitting the ground.
That was it for the battle, and probably the start of an evolution. He couldn't watch. He couldn't get up either, so there was not much else he could do as the other pokemon began to glow lightly. Instead, he closed his eyes, ears laid back in disgust at his own loss. His trainer was the last thing he saw, an equally as irritated written across his face.

Ardeo shot the opposing trainer a smug grin. Like his Pokemon would lose to such an obnoxious jerk. And a household cat against a jungle cat? It wasn't even a contest. He would have said so, too, if Shields hadn't of taken on a glow. Instead Arde looked stunned and amazed as his Shinx began to change...
The final Slash had caused the blue kitten to lay on his belly in pain and exhaustion - but seeing his opponent fall over filled him with a short-lived joy; he felt something inside of him. Like a ball in his chest, expanding until it leaked out of his body. He stood, eyes wide as he felt the power swell and spread...And then he felt the changes. His body was growing larger, his tail elongated and became longer and more whip-like. He felt his gur become thicker, and spread up his neck into a little ruffled mane and then the energy pulled back inside of him, settled into his chest like a contented cat and faded away.
Shields Evolved into a Luxio!

Obviously Shields gained one level!
Andy's hand closed tightly around the empty pokeball, glaring from the Luxio to his exhausted Persian, then back again. The cat pokemon didn't meet his eyes, but his tail continued to twitch in an angry fashion. Many reasons why he had lost ran through his head, and all of them, of course, were not his fault.
The boy hesitated a moment before meeting Ardeo's gaze over the other trainer's new pokemon. "I'll trade him-" he gestured to the cat, who managed enough energy to snap his head back to look at him, "For any decently trained one. As long as it's not something stupid like a bug type."
Coming from anyone else, this would have sounded like defeat. From him, however, it came off as him giving up a noble attempt at training the untrainable. Like it was the Persian's fault he was weak. Though he thought the offer was an acceptable one, he threw in, "And I won't bother you or nothin' for the Bulbasaur."

Ardeo scooped Shields up in an overly loving embrace. The newly-turned Luxio struggled a little in his grip, but was smiling nonetheless. Shields was Arde's first Pokemon to evolve! And it was a pretty big day, even if they had been stuck in several useless loops lately, and it was getting so grating on everyone's nerves. The victory was short-lived, however. When the voice of the other trainer floated over to him, the Blaziken narrowed his eyes. 'This little...' he put Shields back down, and marched right over to the boy, bearing down on the other trainer with golden eyes blazing with fury. "How dare you." he started, feeling a tirade well up within him, "You know that Persian is a lot better trained than you think - and you know what? You don't deserve any of my Pokemon. Not my freshly hatched Taillow and not my battle hardened Spiritomb. And do you know why? You. Have. No. Respect. None!" By this time, Ardeo was making angry hand gestures and flames were starting to frequently break out along his wrists. "You act like you are doing the hard work - but I don't see you spitting fire or shooting out electricity. Quit acting like your Pokemon owe you victories. Sometimes there's more to learn from yours losses than your wins." seeming to catch himself, he took a few breaths to calm himself down. He glanced at the Persian, and then turned a freshly angry gaze at the boy, "And if you're going to treat this poor Persian like he's some sort of battling machine - then yes, I will take him. And no, you will not get a Pokemon from me over it." he cracked his knuckles, "Unless you want to have a battle, just me and you this time." He grinned. "The way people used to settle disputes. You know, in the old days."

He couldn't help the initial step back when the much older man came at him, though the move hardly did any good because soon he had to practically strain to maintain eye contact, they were so close. The instant the other started yelling, he flinched as if expecting to be hit. Immediately heat rose to his face from his own response, knowing he probably looked terrified, only making him angrier.
"I won't be bullied into training my pokemon any differently!" He snapped the instant Ardeo was done, though there was a tiny tremble in his voice. He sounded like a child working hard to maintain his stubbornness. The truth was, he did doubt himself. He didn't want to admit it, but he knew his Persian hated him. He knew it. It used to make him cry when the cat shunned him when they trained. It had made it so much easier to get mad at him. Even his Taillow- now Swellow- wasn't fond of him. The only reason they were a good team was because she actually was a battle machine. There was no connection needed to train her...
Now he was starting to tear up in frustration. "I just can't get anywhere with him." He thrust his hands at the cat who was looking in a different direction with an expression of hurt and anger, "He's never going to like me. I can't fix it." His voice couldn't be redeemed at this point, losing any hope of sounding like anything more than a child on the verge of tears. "That's why I wanted the Bulbasaur." He glared at Ardeo bitterly, trying hard to keep from crying, his cheeks red from embarrassment. Every time his lip quivered his expression hardened until he finally averted his gaze to the ground, muttering, "I just need one that doesn't hate me."

For the briefest of moments, Ardeo's eyes softened. He knew what it felt like to be shunned; the podunk town he had grown up in never got along with him because he was a Poke'Morph. But then his eyes hardened, "You act like things are set in stone." he pointed a finger at the boy's chest, "Your heart is what Pokemon react best to. My Pokemon like me because we're all family, the problem starts with you and spirals out." he crossed his arms, "I'm not saying all Pokemon are angels - your Persian might be grumpy. But that doesn't mean you treat them terrible." he looked down at the Persian, "There is good in most things in this world. And sometimes, you have to go the extra mile to draw it out." He let the silence settle for a moment, "I was serious about what I said though, if you aren't going to change I'm just going to take him. Unless...He wants to stay, of course."
Throughout this, Shields watched in amazement. He'd never really seen Ardeo be a serious person before. It was (ohgodpun) shocking to say the least. The thing that did not surprise the Luxio was the fact that he was offering to rescue the Persian. That boy. He rolled his eyes and then, at the mention of the Bulbasaur turned to see if the little bulb-dinosaur was even still around.

Andy shook his head quickly, wiping snot from his face with his palm. "You don't understand. I know my Persian, and he'll never forgive me." He said it with complete conviction, sneaking a glance at the cat. A conflicted look crossed his features, and was still visible when he looked back up at Ardeo.
"I want to give him to you, but I can't just have one pokemon. It's too easy to turn uncaring with my Swellow, because she doesn't care." He hesitated over his next words, hoping not to be snapped at this time, "Please let me leave here with a different pokemon. I promise I'll be nice to it. I can't just surrender mine without something to take its place."

Ardeo looked rather unconvinced; he still thought this boy was giving up far too easily...But..."Well, here." he dug around in one of his pockets, and pulled out a Poke'ball. "This is a Pokemon I hatched myself, her name is Keira- and ironically she's a Taillow. Level one." he thought about it, "I think she's shiny, so if you notice her feathers are different don't freak out, she doesn't have a disease or anything. She's new to the world and ready for a new template. I'm not that good with Flying-types though." he gestured at himself, "Weakness and all." he held the ball out, "I'll trade her with you, give you a real nice fresh start. But if I run into you again and she's a quivering mass of feathers I will beat you so far into the ground you'll meet the core of the earth." he offered a smile, but his eyes were hard. He was always serious about punching people into the earth. Always.

There was a tiny fire of excitement in the boy's eyes. He knew the different moves and stages of Taillow, and tactics that would make the bird a warrior. And the fact that it was a baby... he could raise it. It literally was a fresh start. And a shiny! Weren't those insanely rare..? He had stopped crying by now, with a few telltale signs of excitement written across his expression.
He took a moment to return his Persian, who had avoided looking their way throughout the entire conversation. He was hurt that he was being tossed around like this, and wondered what the other trainer had in store for him. He couldn't imagine it'd be too much better than Andy, but there was a small glimmer of hope that he would never admit he had.
With the Persian in the ball, Andy pushed it out towards Ardeo. "Thanks." His voice was genuine, and he gestured towards the Bulbasaur, "I guess you won that fair and square, too."
The plant pokemon had just come back out of the bushes, looking nervously between the two as if expecting some kind of fist fight to break out. One that involved that scary bird pokemon who would eat a part of him, no doubt.

Ardeo couldn't help but feel a little good with himself at the look the boy was giving him. He had actually expected the boy to be unhappy with the Pokemon he'd picked to trade - considering he already had a Swellow. 'But it looks like this kid really does want to turn a new leaf. Good.' The Blaziken nodded, holding out the Pokeball to the kid.
Ardeo wants to trade!
Name; Keira Gender; Female Level: 1 Species: Taillow Personality; Rather hasty and quick to assume, this Taillow often finds herself in situations made worse by her haste to make them better. She's very rash and rushes into things without thinking, though when she does think she is actually very smart. Moveset; Peck | Growl Ability: Guts Held Item: None
He fixed Andy with one more serious look, "I want you to promise me, you'll take care of her." the Egg had been something he'd won a very long time ago and he felt a small pinch of guilt at trading his little bird for a full grown cat. Shields turned to offer the Bulbasaur what he hoped look like a reassuring smile and not a murderous grin (he wasn't sure how his facial expressions worked anymore with his new body). He gestured with his head that it was safe to come back over and looked back up at his trainer and the boy.

The boy took the pokeball, replacing it with his own. It felt wonderful to be able to trade. There was something liberating about getting rid of the Persian that had caused him so many difficulties. Trade Accepted!Name; Tolomy Gender; Male Level: 29 Species: Persian Personality; Tough to train because he does not like following orders. Thinks he knows what he's doing, even when he doesn't and will often battle in his own way. He does not get along well with others, and will be arrogant and rude to anyone he talks to. He will refuse to battle if he doesn't feel like it. There is a possibility that regardless of how much affection you give him, he still might not like you. Moveset; Scratch | Growl | Bite | Fake Out | Fury Swipes | Screech | Faint Attack | Taunt Ability: Limber Held Item: None "I promise. She'll surpass my Swellow, and next time I'll check the pokemon's personality before I excitedly catch a moody Meowth." He laughed a little, still slightly on edge from being lectured. The nervous tinge never left his voice, even as he added "He has a name. It's Tolomy, but I have no idea if he's even aware it exists... so it might not be too hard to change it or anything."

Ardeo nodded at the boy, "I'm sure me and him will be fine." he thumped his chest with his free hand, looking confident. "You to get work, kid. We'll meet again, I'm sure....Though you still won't be able to beat me." he smirked at the boy, giving him a quick little salute. Arde himself just recently started, and yet here he was. Giving advice to other kids. 'HAHA! I'm responsible!. He looked down at the Pokeball containing his new "ally". 'Well, I'm sure we'll be okay. Tekken listens to me, how hard can it be? A bird trainer with a cat...' he glanced down at Shields, 'I trained one! I'm sure I manage' he nodded to himself, and then turned to the the Bulbasaur. What to do about this adorable creature?

"We'll see about that!" A return salute was necessary before the boy was off, dashing quickly through the forest where he had come. The pokeball was clamped tightly in his hands, and he was anxious to find some tiny Caterpie to maul with it. There would be no time wasted, in case the predicted meeting between them happened to occur again. He would win this time.
The Bulbasaur, who had shirked back a little more when the intimidating Luxio looked his direction, came quickly when Ardeo called to him. <'m not usually shy, but ya'now... giant bird pokemon... little bulb pokemon. We don't mix well.> He came to the trainers feet before rolling over a little again. He didn't even mention all of the events that occured, not exactly sure what happened anyways. <I have an inch and stubby arms, so you mind getting at that again?>

Ardeo smirked, now he had at least two rivals to look forward to meeting again. 'I wonder how Dmitriy is doing... he sighed as he looked down at the Bulbasaur, grinning wide. "Sure thing, buddy." he scratched the bulb-Pokemon's exposed belly with vigor - happy to see a Pokemon that wasn't going to attack and that wasn't a Ghost-type. It was refreshing to not be tossed right into a battle or have murder attempts on him. Very refreshing. "You're a pretty friendly fellow." Shields sat next to Ardeo, wrapping his tail around his paws and feeling pretty content with himself.
