When she had picked her Oddish, she hadn't been completely prepared for how... awkward, the little pokemon was.. She hobbled only a little ways before tripping on something. Half the time the something didn't even exist, or at least Rowan couldn't figure out what it had been. But then the little grass type would just hop right up like nothing happened and continue on her way.
"You're awful..." She searched for the word, eyeing the klutzy pokemon curiously as she walked- perfectly, even- in heels, "clumsy." She offered a small smile, so as not to hurt the small pokemon's feelings with the statement, but the Oddish seemed completely unphased all together.
"Oh I know!" She said with a little laugh, hobbling along, "Always have been. I just trip and trip and trip and trip over everything it seems." Her voice was high and excited as she continued along the path, wide eyes taking in everything from the marble floor right down to the trees and bushes they passed. "I'm not normally this talkative either" the pokemon admitted seriously, "I just get nervous around new people so I talk and talk and talk and talk. Usually I'm so shy."
The woman really didn't know what to do with that. The pokemon was... really awkward. But it was endearing, in an almost sad way. How different they both were. She didn't say anything, not used to being talked at like this, and instead studied her surroundings. They were far enough from the little village that they should have seen something at least.

It didn't take long for something interesting to happen. The sun, shining brighter than ever before, suddenly became almost impossibly hot, beaming down upon Rowan and her Oddish. A cry was heard from nearby, loud and echoing. "Vuuuul!" A little red pokemon, that had crouched at the bottom of a tree, was stretching its paws out along the ground, butt and curly red tails pushed into the air. What was clearly a female looked up and studied Cricket, her fur glowing a hot red colour. It was clear that she'd used the move Sunny Day- not a bad thing for a fire pokemon to wake up to. "Oh... a human and her pokemon," the Vulpix sighed, trotting forwards. She didn't seem to realise that Rowan could understand her. The fire pokemon moved onto the path in front of them, and plopped down, sitting in their way as the sun continued to burn down upon them. "Where are you headed, huh? You're a bit clumsy for an Oddish. I guess that's what happens when you only have two legs," the little fox continued, a mean smirk moving across her face. Her eyes sparkled, and her gaze flicked up to Rowan before moving back to the Oddish. "You'll be torn apart out there in the big bad real world."
Not exactly the nicest Vulpix out there.

They both jumped at the noise, and the Oddish shirked away from the sun, taking refuge in the shadow of her trainer. Rowan blinked at her. "You are a plant, why don't you relish in the sun's rays?" She asked curiously, returning to her job of searching around them. Something had to have used Sunny Day. It was a move she'd read about when she was researching the fire type...
The Oddish avoided walking out of the shadow without fail, hopping this way and that to keep up with it as she piped up, "Oddish don't really like the sun. We prefer moonlight." She frowned up at the sky. "We get tired in the day time. I'm not used to being up right now."
Both of them were caught off guard by the voice as the Vulpix made herself known. Rowan didn't say a word as the fire type took it upon itself to verbally attack her pokemon. Honestly, she wanted to see the reaction. Would the Oddish stand up for itself, or would it... She saw tears starting to well up in the grass-types eyes. Without hesitation, she snatched the pokemon up and glowered down at the Vulpix. Mainly, she was irritated at the wild pokemon, but there was a small part that wanted to knock some sense into her own.
"Torn apart?" She asked before glancing around, "By whom? You? I bet you can't even Roar." She blinked for a moment at the pokemon, before adding, "You also shouldn't be able to use Sunny Day. Where'd a pokemon like you find a TM?" Her look and voice was accusaational, as if expecting the pokemon to admit she had stolen it from a trainer or something.

"A TM?" the Vulpix cocked her head, and suddenly from behind the tree, out stepped a trainer. He side-stepped and shot Rowan a smirk, tossing a pokeball up and down. "Looks like your Oddish is fresh meat," he sneered. "When she said torn apart, she meant by people like me. Competent, fresh trainers, who know what they're doing. ...So," he said, ruffling his hair. Even in the sun, the boy was wearing a black jacket and dark pants. He didn't seem to be bothered. He raised his eyebrows and looked at Rowan expectantly. The Vulpix trotted back towards him, and he glanced down at it quickly before looking back at the trainer and her Oddish. "...Want to battle? I'll use a pokemon other than my vulpix so that it's fair," he added, putting his hands on his hips and grinning.

Rowan scoffed at him, raising an eyebrow. "Vain, are we?" She asked, wishing the pokemon in her arms would stop being so obviously upset. No wonder they thought she was weak. "A battle sounds-" Like a stupid idea. She only has like... two moves. "Ridiculous. You talk like I can trust you to give me a fair battle. How do I know you won't send out a level 10 Sandshrew that knows Aerial Ace or something? I can already see you've taught them TM moves."
This guy probably made a living from tricking new trainers into battles. "In a fair fight I would win in a heartbeat, but I have no reason to believe it will be."

"Tsk," the boy looked unimpressed at Rowan's words, but responded simply by pulling out a pokeball from behind his jacket, on his belt. When he tossed it out, a Pichu hopped out, looking back at the trainer curiously.
"Just caught him yesterday. Level 5, no surprises. No aerial ace," he added with a smirk. The Pichu looked back up towards Rowan, its eyes landing on the little Oddish- the clearly upset Oddish. The Pichu's yellow ears drooped.
"Well then? I'll let you make the first move, even."

Rowan eyed the little mouse pokemon curiously for a moment. It didn't appear to want to be a part in its trainer's bullying... She would have frowned, but that expression was unbecoming, so she resisted the urge. Besides, there was no room for pity, especially not on an already captured pokemon.
There wasn't room to have it on her own either. She took a few steps back to give the other pokemon and trainer some space, before she leaned forward and set the little grass-type on the ground. There would be no words of comfort, just an expectation that she knew would be met. She hesitated with this decision, clearly doubting that logic. With a soft sigh, she said, "Growth. Make yourself stronger.". It was as close to a confidence boost as she could give the unnamed pokemon.

The trainer grinned, stepping back as well, helping out to create space. His eyes flicked down to the Oddish and studied it for a moment before he looked back at the Pichu, which was clearly awaiting orders.
"Right, let's go with Thundershock!" he ordered, and the Pichu turned, looking at the Oddish and puffing out its chest. Sparks flitted around its cheeks, and it fired a shot at the little grass pokemon, watching with wide eyes to see what the result would be.

There was a moment where Rowan thought her command had been ignored. However, a moment after, the Oddish sniffled but followed orders, burying her feet in the ground slightly to pull energy from the earth. The feeling was a good one, and her leaves grew every so slightly. It helped to shield her from the still overwhelming sunlight. It made her feel better, even if her trainer hadn't offered much help with regard to her emotional state.
"Good." Again, the compliment was a small one, but Rowan hoped one day her Pokemon wouldn't need one in the first place. She opened her mouth to warn the grass-type of the possibility of an electrical attack, but was too late. The electricity immediately coursed through the Oddish, making her take a step back and cover her face with her leaves. Overall, however, it wasn't that effective.
Rowan grinned, feeling more confident. Clearly the boy had a lot to learn still. "You handled that gracefully!" She offered warmly. It surprised her, she was usually so unphased by everything. It was just so unexpected to see her klutzy, sensitive pokemon react so smoothly to the shock. "Now, take that health back with an Absorb!"
The Oddish uncovered her face with her leaves, eyes bright with renewed confidence, and a light green light flew towards the Pichu, seeking to sap back some life.

The boy frowned as he watched the Oddish grow its leaves and get ready. He looked at the trainer curiously. She seemed to know what she was doing- why did she look so new to everything?
His jaw dropped as the Oddish took the attack as if it was nothing. What? "Again," he ordered, frustration filling him, even as the Pichu staggered backwards after getting hit with absorb. It's health sapped, it looked back at its trainer, upset, before attacking the Oddish again with the same move.

The Oddish wasn't even struggling at this point, tensing up her entire body to take in the electricity, before continuing with another Absorb. The green light lashed out once more, and for once, she felt strong. She realized that was probably the Growth upping her attack, but either way the new sense of confidence was encouraging.
Rowan had a smile smile, her arms crossed as she watched her little grass-type pipe up another move without her command. It would not be something she let become a habit- only untrained pokemon fought without orders- but she could let it go here. After all, the Oddish only had two moves to work with.

The boy frowned. This wasn't going as well as he thought it would. He hadn't known that electric moves weren't very effective on grass or poison types, and now he felt stupid, bragging around like he had. Maybe he had to use more of a strategy. "Charm." he called out, after his Pichu had staggered backwards again after another hit from Absorb. His HP was falling fast. The little mouse used as much charisma as it could, looking cute for the Oddish and, hopefully, reducing its attack. Nonetheless, one more good hit, and the Pichu would probably go down. It wished that its trainer would recall it, but the boy did no such thing, and instead waited for the inevitable.

The Pichu looked adorable, and beyond that, innocent. The Oddish was preparing another Absorb when she looked into the Electric-type's eyes, recalling the way the Pichu had noticed her crying. The expression on the other's face that made it obvious attacking was the last thing on its mind. How could she lash out at something so sweet? It wasn't its fault the Trainer was a bully...
"This is a battle." Rowan reminded when she noticed her own Pokemon's delay in attack, clearly not as phased by the sweetness of the move as her unnamed Oddish was, "You can't back down now, you need the experience of a win." Her voice was calm, as she had forced her previously excited emotions from it and regained her indifferent demeanor.
The Oddish hesitated just a moment more before closing her eyes and lashing out at the (not innocent, no innocent, not innocent) mouse.

The trainer grinned as the Oddish hesitated, and he looked at Rowan with an unimpressed glare when she spoke to the little grass pokemon. "It's going soft on you," he said with a laugh, but he cut himself off as the Oddish, clearly listening to what Rowan had said, shut its eyes and attacked anyway. The attack was enough to finish off the Pichu. It flopped down onto its bum, eyes spinning for a moment, before finally falling backwards into the grass, nearly disappearing completely. The trainer frowned, returning the pokemon. He didn't say another word, but walked up to Rowan, handed her some Steps, and then walked away again.
Oddish grew to level 6! Rowan received 20 steps from the trainer!

Rowan simply stood there, hand outstretched as he silently returned the pokemon. The corners of her lips twitched as he took steps forward and placed a handful of the currency in her palm. Just watching him wallow in his own defeat was fantastic enough, she didn't have to rub it in. Without even offering a smile, she lifted one arm and gave a polite wave as he departed, checking on her Oddish the moment his back was turned.
The grass type was staring after him, a frown on her face. This made Rowan frown too, eyebrows narrowing slightly. "What is your problem?" She asked, voice not hiding her surprise, "You just won, you are supposed to look happier than that."
"I just wish that Pichu hadn't been his." The grass-type said quietly, glancing back at her with those little black eyes, "It makes me sad. He doesn't deserve good pokemon." It was obvious the term 'good' was being used for the personality, rather than the quality. The Pichu wasn't exactly the strongest Pokemon, after all.
