It is time to be awakened...
Dance with the fae...
“Litharia once belonged to the fae. It was a land full of magic, wild and free. A land both peaceful and deadly. The fae understood the balance of life. They were the first caretakers of the world and were the closest with the gods. There were fairies, whimsical and bright. There were elves, intelligent and graceful. The changelings were feral and quick. And then there were my kind, the muses, spirits of passion and talent.
I am a battle muse. My body is designed to fight and to inspire fear among my enemies. I am a creature of blood. But once upon a time I was a human boy. I was kidnapped as a two year old and taken into the Mound. They fed me the food of Faeryland. My body began to change. My ears grew long and pointed. My brown hair was stained with the red of blood. Brown eyes brightened to a shimmering garnet.
I learned to see the world from the eyes of my fae-father. The humans were trying to conquer Litharia and they were killing it in the process. I could feel the land growing sick with their presence. The humans brought iron weapons so that they could kill the magic of the land directly. Wherever they built their cities, the land screamed in pain. Litharia was torn by war. The fae are driven to protect the land of their life blood.
Humans are cruel. Once, I believed that was true of all of them. Recent history has led me to question this belief, along with many others. Oh, Cloti. I should never have fallen in love with you. One thing is certain. I will continue to lead the Song of the Heroes for as long as I live. I will rescue the prisoners of war because war IS a cruel thing. There is no gray area there. I’ll make my mind up about the humans later.”
Hunt with the daemons...
“The war has had little effect on my people. We lack the passion of the fae, for we are not from this world. We lack the drive of the humans because we are not so organized. It is every daemon for his or her own self. The elementals, vampires, demons, and golems share very little in common. We are all independent, that much can be said. To be anything else is a sign of weakness.
Even so, I empathize with the fae more than most. I know what it feels like to be betrayed, and is that not what they have gone through? They remember the arrival of the humans. They remember helping the short-lived creatures survive and teaching them the ways of the forest. And they remember when the humans began to harvest their blood for magic. Now the humans are destroying their home.
Humans are such fragile things. Strange how much they have conquered. Strange how many walls and buildings they have erected. Just look at their castle. It has an odd sort of beauty to it. I will never understand how the creatures are able to work together so well. Corruption seems to be a natural way of life for them. Those with power are not to be trusted. Those without power are bound to get stabbed in the back.
And somehow they keep going, repeating the same story over and over again. I am still unsure whether to call this a strength or a weakness. Perhaps it is simply a double edged sword that every human is forced to carry. I empathize with the fae. But I am fascinated by the humans. When it all comes down to it, I think I would rather watch the war take place. No need to get involved.”
Hide among the shapeshifters...
“Hmph. The fae spread all of this nonsense about the great balance and respect for all living things, but they are really not all that different from the humans in my book. They still narrow their eyes when they see us. What about the sprites, do they not deserve respect? And the werebeasts, aren’t the more than just animals? How about my kind, the celestials, or the strange terrkas?
Do we not all have something beautiful about us? Personally, I think the others have it wrong. We’re the lucky ones. We are the only creatures in Litharia who get to wander around in the bodies or our true selves. Talk about true freedom. Maybe the others are jealous. Maybe that is why the fae do not trust us and the humans enslave us. Humans think we’re pets. The fae think we have no loyalty.
If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em! I will let them think whatever they want so long as it works to my advantage. But let’s get one thing straight. Nobody messes with a shapeshifter other than a shapeshifter. We look out for our own. The City of Thieves belongs to us and our connections run wide. Ain’t nobody going to speak for us so we gotta do it ourselves. What’s that look for?
Oh, I get it. You thought I was a half wit. That’s okay, everyone does. It’s all part of the act, you see. Poor, little, innocent fallen celestial just trying to make her way in the world. Let me bring you down to our world. You will see things much differently. Call me Amber Sweet. Whatever you want, I can put a price on it. Because there is nothing that a resourceful shapeshifter can’t accomplish.”

“Let us speak openly with one another, shall we? My name is Laydon of Jagkha and I am one of the king’s knights. I am a white sorcerer in training. You see the crystal dangling from my neck? That artifact was crafted specifically for me, to answer my magical calling. It was made using the blood of a wood elf that my father killed. As of right now, I do not know how to consciously access the magic inside it.
This war is really quite ridiculous when you think about it. It is a matter of morality and nothing more. The fae do not understand right from wrong. Not that we humans are perfect. Not by any means! But we do have the ability to understand. We have rules and standards; a higher form of government than the other species of Litharia. We tried to teach them.
Because they refuse to learn it is only natural that we are forced to carry the burden ourselves. The magic of the land helps, of course. Mages use the blood of fairies in their artifacts. Sorcerers use the blood of elves. Shamans use the blood of the changelings. The talented use the blood of muses. Do not look so horrified. The fae are of an evil nature. They slaughter our people with their magics and steal our children from us.
War is a terrible thing, but these creatures are making it a necessity. One day, I dream of a bright new world. A world without the evil creatures that haunt our nightmares. It is peace that I dream of. Beautiful, unperturbed peace. I want our children to be able to play in the forest. I want our women to be able to walk the streets. I am going to eradicate the evil of this world!”
