"Dad, I told you about this yest-"
"Don't lie to me son, yer old man isn't stup.. stupid."
Dmitriy's dad tried to stay something else, but it was impossible to decipher what it was since the words were mashed together and slurred enough for the graying-haired man to swallow his tongue. Dmitriy cringed away from his father's alcoholic breath. It was 10:00am, and his father was already drunk. The only rest his body would get from the toxins would be at around 1:00 when he passed out.
"Dad.. I need this. I need to be away from here. I'm twenty one."
"Dun be so.. so over-dramatic, son, you only.. yer.. nineteen."
He took another swig from his drink, breathing another puff of his breath into his son's face as he swallowed.
"Alright dad. I'm nineteen. I'm going for a walk."
"'Right, son, don't be seein' that gi.. girl. What'ser name? Nicole?"
"Shea, dad. Her name was Shea."
"Whatever."
The man belched, and with that Dmitriy backed away, turning only when he was sure he had enough of his dad for the rest of his life. Forever.
"Bye dad." He whispered as he ran into his room, grabbing what little bit of money he had before walking back out, opening the door that protested with a bunch of creaks and squeals. He ran out, closing it behind him.
He paused once, a feeling of regret filling him. He had taken care of his dad. Would his father even survive him leaving? Who would buy the man's groceries? Who would drive him around? Who would help him to the toilet when his stomach finally wanted to send it all back?
He wouldn't.
He ran, panting by the time he got to the steps of the lab. The lab that would give him his companion. He glanced back, but his house was far gone.
He was by himself. No one to hold him back.
He ran up the stairs, taking two at a time with a weird excitement and a strange sense of terror. As if something was following him.
He shoved the door open and closed it behind him, closing his eyes as he leaned on it. He was in.
He was in?
He glanced around. The lab's front room was in front of him.
"H.. hello?"
